Elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) continues to impact Asian elephants and now, increasingly, African elephants, in human care. The extent of its impact on the wild populations is just starting to be elucidated.
The North American EEHV Advisory Group is planning a three-day virtual EEHV Symposium January 25-27, 2022, from 5:00am to 8:00am PST (1:00pm to 4:00pm GMT). Although we are disappointed that we cannot meet with all our colleagues in person, we are happy to facilitate this meeting to gather everyone together and exchange ideas on how to improve outcomes for elephant populations impacted by EEHV.
We look forward to including researchers, veterinarians, and elephant husbandry colleagues from across the world to participate in what we hope will be a global symposium to present case reports, research findings, vaccine research, treatments, and advisory/working group updates. We will also be organizing regional breakout sessions as well as panel discussions on treatment and husbandry/training.
Abstracts submissions are welcome on any topic pertaining to EEHV and you are especially encouraged to share your new information on EEHV research, clinical management, training, institutional support, and conservation connections. Abstracts are due by December 27, 2021, to Meredith Wagoner (meredithwagoner1@yahoo.com). Please follow the example abstract format.

Summary:
The responsibility of this position is to maintain and care for elephants and other assigned species; to assist veterinary staff as needed; and to perform a variety of activities relative to the assigned area of responsibility.

Qualifications:

Early this year the Elephant Managers Association announced we will replicate our efforts and host a virtual conference again this year, on October 11-15, 2021. We will host the EMA 2021 virtual conference via GotoMeeting conference platform. EMA members will be sent a link and password allowing members to access this virtual conference all week long. This conference will be free to all EMA members.
EMA is now accepting papers for our virtual conference. To submit your paper, please fill out the Call for Papers form. All forms and abstracts are due September 1, 2021. The Call for Papers committee will be selecting papers that cover all topics in elephant management from traditional power point presentations to live feeds on training or enrichment items from a facility. All presentations will be 15 minutes long with a 5-minute question-and-answer period. All presenters must have good internet capability. Presenters will be selected and notified by September 14, 2021. Once selected as a presenter, the Call for Papers committee will inquire on your preferred method of how you wish to send your presentation.

Large Mammal Lead Zoologist (Elephants)
JOB SUMMARY
This is a team lead, senior-level position in animal care, following established protocols to provide outstanding animal care for species in the section: food preparation, feeding, exhibit maintenance, pest control, and reproductive management. Zoologists participate in operant conditioning and husbandry programs, provide approved environmental enrichment, work collaboratively to improve animal exhibits, and prepare and conduct educational presentations and tours for zoo guests. Lead Zoologists may act as formal representatives of DZM in AZA Animal programs; will act as team leaders on specific projects, as assigned, or in the absence of a Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor. Additionally will provide crucial guidance, mentoring, and training to less senior staff, mentoring entry-level Zoologists. SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES • Provide overall daily care of assigned animals and exhibits to ensure animal health, safety, and welfare, staff and public safety as set forth by AZA, USDA, and DZM to include: • Observe and monitor animals’ general health and behavior, reporting any abnormal behavior to supervisor and/or veterinary staff; • Prepare and provide food for assigned animals, following written instructions, provide water and administer medication as instructed to ensure proper nutrition and health; • Clean animal exhibits, holding pens, food prep areas, and equipment, maintaining a high level of sanitation, conducting pest control activities and reporting any mechanical defects that would endanger the animal, zoo staff, and/or guests; • Achieve the highest standards of animal welfare and wellness by providing environmental enrichment and training sessions, using operant conditioning, as applicable; • Participate in or assist with the capture and restraint of a variety of taxa including dangerous species • Prepare and update animal records, reports and surveys, assisting in research projects as necessary to ensure thorough documentation and enhanced knowledge of animal biology; • Will act as the liaison for ZIMS-related needs including regular meetings with the Zoo Registrar, communicating relevant ZIMS-related information back to the section, and training new staff in the proper use of and data entry into ZIMS • Perform general maintenance and repair of exhibits: painting, repairing fences and shelters, abating erosion, planting ground cover and removing weeds; • Provide assistance with animal transfers and/or procedures as directed; • Interact positively and professionally with animal care and veterinary staff and volunteers; • Actively encourage interest in wildlife through positive interaction with zoo guests via educational presentations focused on animals, biology, conservation, and environmental issues; • Utilize the enrichment item/device proposal form to create new enrichment ideas and items to be added to taxa repertoires and properly record the results of enrichment items after each use; • Collaborate with other zoo personnel as needed to meet the zoo’s mission. This can include, but is not limited to, assisting and participating in media events, special tours, and public relations projects; • Participate in and support zoo-wide initiatives, committees, and work groups; • Understand and support Dallas Zoo’s Strategic and Master Plans and departmental collection plans; • Study specific reference materials pertinent to animal care, behavior and natural history as assigned; • Follow all safety protocols and understand the animal keeper's role in emergency procedures, responding to emergencies as required; • Be able to supervise and train volunteers and interns within department as needed; eligible to act as an assigned mentor to interns and volunteers responsible for counseling, coaching, and ensuring follow up on assigned intern/volunteer goals • Assist with the beautification of our park by removing trash and debris whenever you see it; • Assist with and raise awareness for AZA SAFE programs; • Eligible to serve in Chair positions on Dallas Zoo Management internal committees as well as rotating on to the intern selection committee • Act as an assigned Mentor to entry-level Zoologists in a formal mentorship program including regular check-in meetings, tracking goals, and providing feeding back to Supervisors to ensure the entry-level staff is progressing appropriately • Eligible to formally represent Dallas Zoo Management in AZA Animal Program roles including Institutional Representative, committee member, Studbook Keeper, SSP Coordinator, etc. • In the absence of Supervisor or Assistant Supervisor, may be needed to act as the section representative or contact for animal management or veterinary needs. Additionally, will coordinate the safe animal capture, restraint, and veterinary procedures for non-routine procedures. • Perform other duties as assigned. About the role:
We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven animal care professional to join our elephant care team as our herd prepares to grow by one! Multigenerational herd management is the core of this elephant program. Our focus is with maintaining and improving female herd dynamics, facilitating natural breeding, and providing for appropriate male social opportunities. We strive to provide the maximum amount of choice and control to our elephants through our management practices. The elephants are managed in a protected contacted system following AZA’s Standards for Elephant Management and Care. Individuals must function as a part of the elephant team to ensure a safe and productive work environment. Duties will include but are not limited to all aspects of the daily management of African elephants including daily cleaning and exhibit maintenance, feeding, enrichment, detailed record keeping, behavioral observations, browse collection, general maintenance, public demonstrations, and husbandry training. This is a 40 hour per week position that includes weekends and holidays. This position reports to the Elephant Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):
· General exhibit and holding area cleaning and maintenance.
· Planning, implementing, and evaluating daily resource management to improve elephant wellness.
· Detailed record keeping, following the AZA Standards for Elephant Management and Care.
· Collection and identification of approved browse species.
· Daily husbandry training via protected contact utilizing positive reinforcement.
· Behavioral observations and video review.
· Assisting with husbandry and veterinary care.
· Public training demonstrations and keeper chats.
· Regular team meetings.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
· Must have a high school diploma (or GED) with a preference for a bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology, or a related field.
· Qualified candidates should possess at least 2 years of paid experience in animal husbandry, preferably with elephants or other large mammals, at an AZA accredited institution.
· Completion of AZA’s Principles of Elephant Management 1 is a plus.
· Experience with operant conditioning techniques utilizing positive reinforcement is preferred.
· Preference will be given to candidates with protected contact elephant experience, however, candidates with applicable experience with other taxa will also be considered.
· A working knowledge of the AZA Standards for Elephant Management and Care and Occupational Safety Guidelines for elephant care professionals is expected.
· Candidates should be familiar with or capable of learning the safe use of various power tools and heavy equipment including but not limited to chainsaws, drills, and a Bobcat or similar equipment.
· The ability to work well as part of a team, by listening and contributing.
· The ability to work in a fast paced and dynamic environment.
· Must have a strong work ethic.
· An understanding of behavioral welfare and its importance, along with an understanding of behavior-based enrichment and how to implement and evaluate its effectiveness.
