Elephant Managers Association Conference
Hosted by Zoo Miami
Dates: October 9th – 12th
Miami, Florida (March 5, 2018) – The Elephant Managers Association (EMA) announced Zoo Miami as their 39th Annual Conference Host during the 2017 EMA Conference closing ceremonies last October. Since then, staff from Zoo Miami and the EMA Executive Committee have begun preliminary planning to produce a premier gathering of leaders among the elephant management community to be held in the beginning of October 2018.
EMA partners with leaders in the elephant community to host the annual conference, which allows the cooperative exchange of knowledge, communication, and networking throughout the elephant management industry. Host facilities are chosen based on their commitment to elephants, their conservation and research efforts, skills and experience, hospitality, and willingness to foster growth and development in other programs.
EMA President Nancy Scott stated, “The EMA Board of Directors are thrilled that Zoo Miami is hosting this year’s conference. Elephant professionals from around the world will have the opportunity to visit Zoo Miami’s immersive African and Asian Elephant habitats and experiencing the unity of learning from and with colleagues of various backgrounds. This is the EMA’s first time visiting Zoo Miami and we look forward to experience their first-rate hospitality and a program packed full of hands-on workshops, panel discussions, and paper presentations. We are excited to give EMA delegates plenty of opportunity to discover new ideas.”
Each conference attracts approximately 200 delegates for two days filled with formal presentations from around the world, panel discussions, and a third “Zoo day” visit to our host. This year we will focus our panel discussions on the care before and after a downed elephant, elephant facility design, and elephant wellness. A limited number of delegates can arrive early to attend our Pre-conference Training Workshop focusing on AZA’s Standard Elephant Program Behavioral Components.
The EMA’s annual conference is the most accessible and affordable opportunity for elephant care professionals to expand their knowledge and professional network. Delegates will receive cutting edge information focusing on professional elephant management trends and will have the unique opportunity to see firsthand the methods employed by other established elephant programs.
With the help of the EMA Board of Directors, Executive and Conference Committees, Zoo Miami will have the opportunity to showcase the features that make it a premier elephant program. To register for this year’s EMA Conference please view the information below.
